Picky Eaters

My son was the king of picky eaters. Fortunately he realized he was no longer interested in keeping his followers hungry and resigned with shame.
It was the morning of my sons first birthday when he took his resolution to  not eat.
Then started the endless feeding sessions, stories and running sessions in the patio with the food, water games in the grass..everything to end up in a battle.
Tried these with your baby? Still doesn't eat a thing? I can help, i have been there.
A difficult time to let out the stress, the frustration. The emotional and  physical exhaustion of not having a third hand, self cursing times… Gosh disaster days.
After all this how does the movie conclude?  'Throwing up frustrations on your already irritated husband and calling off our lives.'

After innumerable horrible mistakes, i do have a plan now.. which works prefect with my son. But trust me, after everything i went through, i never thought i would any day come out of it with flying colors. But today my son wants anything that i eat or taste. He taps his high chair when he gets hungry, sits, relax and eat! I cant believe it. There is always a good time waiting for us. Be brave you moms.. pull up you sock and gather the pieces of your shattered life. We are the controllers of ourselves, we will get past this.

Here is what i tried. Now, I stopped breastfeeding on the day my son turned 1 year and 7 months. The root cause being the taste of milk. He was so addicted that he lived on breast milk for around 6 months after his first birthday. Stopping it completely might have made him realize he needed other sources of energy to keep up with the play.
Lesson number 1 from my notebook.
Kids will eat only if they want to which i realized so so late. We can waste our energy trying on our best efforts.. but if they don't want to eat, they wont. Be it rain or shine.. it doesn't matter.

1. Fix a place and time where you want them to sit while they eat. I think that makes them understand its a special place and a special time to sit and eat. Keep up the routine.According to me, the worst idea is carrying them all over the place and showing those silent birds outside and slipping in a bite. Once they get heavier you will suffer.. and also imagine the mess on the carpets after the spitting and spilling! So i suggest never even give a taste of that idea to yourself.

2. Eat with them, atleast act you are having the same food from the same plate.
I call it the 'super delicious ahaaa' effect. Though we know some baby food are just not great, pretend as if thats the best delicacy in the world. Kids will definitely think of it and try it out. Even now when i say 'aaah' after a coffee sip, my son runs to me to sip a little.

3. Make them touch and smell the food with their hands or spoons allowing them to experience different textures. This exploring technique made a huge difference in my son. He touches, feels and then only puts it in his mouth. Now if they are really playing with food, you know when to slip in a mouthful.. they wouldn't even know they just swallowed..right?

4. Appreciate them when they take a bite. My token of appreciation is  to clap hands for every good thing he does. After every bite i used to clap and jump to show how much i appreciated him for trying a bite.

5. Make them taste everything we eat. My baby takes a pinch of spicy tortilla chips to  hot tea to even sushi. It takes time for them to understand food is great, but after they do its fun to watch them explore it.

6. Make them think they are feeding themselves. Let them handle a portion of food. I always keep an opened yogurt jar for him. He will dip the spoon in it and try to lick it. Just when they are about to lick, we slip in our spoon of rice. Basically it means tricking them. They can so easily get carried away and we can finish our job in between.

7. Try not to show your frustration. There were times when i used to spend 2 hours on feeding. I used to go mad, shout at him, get angry and throw plates and  things went flying across the room. But later i realized that was only helping him to hate food and learning to throw plates. So i turn on my favorite serial or a hindi movie and concentrate on that. Else if you keep thinking of your time being wasted chances are high that you will bubble up and burst.

8. Find out their favorite flavor or texture and sneak in some veggies. Its a difficult task as what do we expect from a picky eater? To like a flavor or texture? God, if they eat a spoonful that would be enough to smile once that day! But, eventually i found out that my boy was loving mac and cheese. The freedom to pick pieces individually, the shape, may be the color..So i slipped in thinly sliced beans, grated carrots and grated boiled eggs along with it. He dint even know he was chewing some veggies and nutrients with it. He also liked cold stuff.. so i used to chill up milk and cookies! Try out different textures like crunchy, mashed up , smooth, sticky, chewy, hard or mixed textures.

9. Distracting them during dinner time. Every mom would have tried that. Stories, TV, plates, running water... anything to please them. I used to give him anything that he pointed at. But giving them whatever they want kind of makes them cranky later. So avoid mobile phones, tv remote, lipstick and cooker whistle.(I had tough time hiding those from him, still do)

10. Make eating time  Fun time . Suppose if its snack time and he is offered marshmallows or round cheerios. I poke both sides of a straw with it and make it attractive. Introduce colorful or transparent spoons and plates. If they are not drinking enough, try sippy cups or straws or even small glasses.

11. Stop when you get the sign. Its of no use pushing for the last bite. Pressuring kids to eat works only to make them hate food. He will start thinking of it as a punishment. Baby will show good signs when they are done. Respect their signs.

Still not working? Well, don't bubble up. Your kid might just not be hungry. As long as they are active and playing around, they are good.
Be patient and keep trying. Picky eating is not likely to change overnight. Simple matter of time. Just be strong.
Victory will be ours! :D

Ok babies,
We moms understand that rice can be boring!!!
Couscous is the perfect substitute. Couscous is a grain product made from semolina. Its texture and taste makes it a real wonderful treat for kids.
I buy these from Trader joe's. Its Israeli couscous.

1 cup couscous
1 1/2 cups chicken broth or water (I prefer broth.. it gives an amazing flavor)
1/2 onion
1 cup cooked Black bean or any beans
1/2 cup green peas
1 tomato
1 TBS butter
2 TBS lemon juice
cilantro or curry leaves
Herb seasoning or any Italian seasoning.

Bring chicken broth to a boil.
Add couscous and wait until the broth is fully absorbed.
Turn off the heat and let it stand for a while.
Then fluff the couscous well to break up any chunks.
In a pan, melt the butter, saute onions, tomatoes and black beans.
Add the seasoning, cilantro and lemon juice.
Add couscous to the pan and mix well.

You can use any vegetables that you want with this recipe.

Simple and savory meal right?

The simplest of all. Toast bread with a cheese slice and that makes it a perfect breakfast/lunch/dinner.

Funky Pancakes with Date syrup

* These are recipes which my toddler baby loves and snacks on. Every baby is different. Offer single-ingredient foods at first, and wait three to five days between each new food. Always check your baby for any reaction to a particular food.

With a store-bought Pancake mix, I have tried like a 100 different pancakes for my boy.
Marshmallow pancakes, chopped nuts pancake, raisin pancakes, fresh fruit pancake, chocolate chip pancakes and even tried out grated carrot pancakes.
All you need is to add water or milk.

2 cup pancake mix
1 egg
1 cup milk
I beat up these three together and make it equally consistent as idli batter.

Just like we make dosas, spread the mix in the pan. Top it up with the fav ingredient. This one is a
marshmallow and raisin pancake. Make sure both the sides are cooked and just light brown.

Flip it over when the bubbles start to break.

I make mini pancakes with raisins and one marshmallow in each one.
Stack it up and serve my boy with date syrup. Yumoooooooo!!!!

Enjoy the pancake stacking game fun along with its delicious taste.

Baby Safety Latches

Every baby becomes a 'Curious George' once they start crawling. Many of you would have already thrown away stuff babies put in the toilet. Picked up tomatoes from floor which your baby threw thinking its the red ball. Now,  trust me you will laugh at seeing them being depressed looking at the never opening cabinets, fridge or toilets!

I had researched a lot and finally found the 'Multi purpose latches' were the best.
I figured that Walmart had these for the cheapest rates. It comes in a small box with 2 of them inside.
You can find it in the baby section. Easy as it looks, it has 2 parts, one the buckle and other the holder. Just remove the adhesive from behind and stick it! thats it.

For the first time, i laughed at seeing him yell at the cabinet. He tried an hour trying to break the buckle.

Another  efficient one is the '14 pack Cabinet and Drawer Latches'. But you need to drill the screws on both the sides of the cabinet. So that decision is upto you. The pack comes with screws and 14 sets of latches. When you need to open you press down the long nob off from the hook.

The most important one is to cover the Plug points.

This fits in so tight that baby doesn't stand a  chance to dig it  out.

After we have our baby, our next big concern is to take care of that little one. Everything else slips off our minds including our husbands. Crunchy Beans

Your baby doesn't eat veggies? Well i have the perfect idea to make them eat any veggie.
Deep fry them in the batter. The texture of fried items are loved by kids.
I fry cauliflower, carrots, potatoes, broccoli  and any vegetable.
Its perfect finger food for babies.

2 cups Breadcrumbs (Panko or Italian seasoned or whichever you want to get
1 cup all purpose flour
Salt to taste
Pepper to taste (If you baby can take the heat)
1 beaten egg with salt and pepper
9-10 washed and soaked beans Beans

we will have to shallow fry these. So heat up the skillet and pour in enough oil.
Place flour, egg and breadcrumbs in 3 different plates in this order.
Coat the beans with flour, and dip into the egg.
Coat them well with breadcrumbs.
Now fry them until golden and cooked through both the sides.

It is crunchy, chewy , tasty and filling.

Chicken Nugget

* These are recipes which my toddler baby loves and snacks on. Every baby is different. Offer single-ingredient foods at first, and wait three to five days between each new food. Always check your baby for any reaction to a particular food.

I'm a chicken nugget fan. So is my hubby and baby. But after reading this article on how its made,  we stopped buying it from stores. It hardly takes 10 minutes to make it at home and you better wait it to cool down a bit as you wont be able to resist.

You can substitue fish for chicken in the Breaded Fish sticks recipe or here is another simple one.

5-6 pieces of boneless and skinless chicken breasts
1 cup all purpose flour
1 beaten egg with salt and pepper
Garlic powder and paprika to taste.

Always rinse chicken and pat it dry.
Wash your hands everyone time after you touch raw chicken.
Now mix up flour and egg and powders. ( I do it in my mixer. Its easier).
You can even add a cheese slice while mixing. Gives another flavor and softer texture.
Coat the chicken in this batter. Make sure there is no excess batter. Just a thin coat is good.
Shallow fry them until golden brown and till both sides are cooked through.

Can't wait to get my hands on them.. Enjoy the nuggets!

Breaded Fish Sticks

* These are recipes which my toddler baby loves and snacks on. Every baby is different. Offer single-ingredient foods at first, and wait three to five days between each new food. Always check your baby for any reaction to a particular food.

This is one of the easiest way to make them eat fish. My son loves to eat fish with rice and sambhar. But recently i came up with the idea to try some breaded fish and he loves it.
I altered a Martha Stewart Fish stick recipe. Here it goes.
I usually get Salmon,Tilapia, shrimp and milk fish.

2 cups Breadcrumbs (Panko or Italian seasoned or whichever you want to get
1 cup all purpose flour
Salt to taste
Pepper to taste (If you baby can take the heat)
1 beaten egg with salt and pepper
Fish fillet, cut into long pieces ..long enough for babies to hold and small enough to finish one.

we will have to shallow fry these. So heat up the skillet and pour in enough oil.
Place flour, egg and breadcrumbs in 3 different plates in this order.
Coat the fish with flour, and dip into the egg.
Coat them well with breadcrumbs.
Now fry them until golden and cooked through both the sides.
Well, they dont need sauce to go with.. But make sure they stay and one place and not roam around with these sticks all over the house. Else, you know who will stink.

Rice and Dal Medley

* These are recipes which my toddler baby loves and snacks on. Every baby is different. Offer single-ingredient foods at first, and wait three to five days between each new food. Always check your baby for any reaction to a particular food.

Dal and rice has been in our indian menu for so long. Its such a savory meal for adults as well as kids.
My son loves this for lunch..that you can see ...

We can try out so many combinations with dal and rice and vegetables.

Ingredients needed:
Rice                        : 2 Tbsp
Dal                         : 3 Tbsp
Turmeric powder   : a Pinch
Salt - To taste -      : 1/5 Tsp
Vegetables             : Carrots, Beans, Cauliflower, Spinach, potato, tomato, broccoli

Rice , dal and any one vegetable or a mix of vegetable as per your choice will work great.
I usually mix up carrots and potatoes OR cauliflower and beans. My son likes these combinations. You can try out different tastes with available vegetables.

Pressure cook the rice, dal, vegetables with turmeric and salt for around 2-3 whistles( depends on your pressure  cooker). You can try different textures. 3 whistles makes it real mashed up. 1-2 will be great if kids doesn't like mashed up stuff.

Mix with 1 Tsp ghee and serve it when warm.

If suppose we are going out after lunch and be home only late, that is past evening snack time, i often slip in one whole egg after i open the cooker and mix it well. Egg is one ingredient which fills up their little tummy fast and last for longer time.
I mix it after i turn off the heat so that it doesn't scramble up as my son doesn't like scrambled eggs in his rice. So try out stuff till you confirm a recipe your baby approves.

Another high end version of dal rice medley includes sauteing
oil          - 1 spoon
mustard - 1/2 spoon
cumin seeds - 1/2 spoon
Finely chopped onions - 1/2 onion
Garlic cloves                -1
curry leaves                  -2

and adding to the rice mixture.
This gives another flavor.

If you want more different flavors, try adding little of crushed cumin powder or lemon pepper powder. It makes a big difference. Babies will be happy to taste something new every lunch time.

Cheerios are crunchy and a breakfast must item for my baby.
They come in different flavors with chocolate cheerios being omy's fav.
You can wow your baby with this fabulous finger food. Omy loves to munch on these at any given time of the day. I guess the liberty to pick one themselves with their tiny fingers is what makes it more tastier. It is a good breakfast item if you add milk or even without milk.

About me

An indian wife at the 'Motherhood University' in the US..learning new chapters every minute with her baby. Understanding him and always worried if he is hungry. I am a fun loving person.. but for one thing ..my son...i would keep aside the whole world to make sure am doing everything right.

I was as confused as a baby after my son started trying solid food. Depressed with the google search results I opted the trial and error method. So here i am trying to help new confused moms with my way of baby care. The look on your baby's face after he finishes a hearty and healthy meal... Priceless. What else does a mom need.

Mom,wife,Marriage..Life in Rewind

Today my son completes 1 year and 7 months and i just passed the first grade along with the practical exam on the subject - Baby till toddler from the Motherhood University.
I know the road until the graduation is not anyway near.
He lay his hands on the dinner spread and tastes everything that we eat. Today i feel i am a successful mother, i did carve a niche in this profession.well just a beginning. That was not a cake walk.. it was a fire walk.
My son was done with his decision of not eating or dieting or whatever they call it in baby language. One fine day he changed his mind.  Slowly the baby theory is now registered. My son eats every 3-4 hours now. The baby theory 'No baby stays hungry. They eat only when they want to' is now registered in one the compartments in my brain. If he is hungry he will come up to his highchair and tap it, if not he will just show no interest in the food.
When i look back, this rollercoaster ride from being a new mom until this day was horrifying. Its no more a rollercoaster but kind of a classroom now where i am a student and my son my teacher.

Story goes back to my sons first bday. I guess it was his birthday resolution to not eat. Well that i must say roped the part called frustration to my chores kitty! Long feeding sessions in the patio, in the grass in the sun, kitchen counter throw away plates games, watching 'Evian baby' commercial ..all failed to gain his attention. Food was being wasted. Every day i get up thinking just one thing. 'What should i feed him today'. Luckily my hubby never complained of not getting his breakfast some days. I started unknowingly ignoring him, the love of my life, my son's father... my son was like this core of the earth.. pulling me towards him with all his gravitational force. My only center of attraction. Well, googling and suggestions from mom and friends did help a little.
But for me the baby theory never registered in my brain or may i dint want to believe in it. There were days he survived only with breast milk. Hardly 10 oz a day. And the fear of baby not getting much of needed vitamins and proteins haunted me. All play and no food wasn't working for me. But the 'muah's i got from him at night washed away the tensions for the day, but again it all did come back by morning.

Six months went by, my experiments with baby food, baby items.. spoon, cups, sippy cups all failed. I awarded myself as the 'Best Frustrated Wicked Mom' award. Now that i was the villain why not make it worse by stopping breast milk? One fine week went by without milk..I had to wear a sweater and block my breasts from him. It worked anyway.

And 6 months before first birthday.. life had taken a 360 degree turn... on that turn everything fell apart. The routine, the feeding, the sleep, the food. 6 months went a little too fast only to realize that along with mom and mom in law, help too took a ride with them back to India.
The kitchen chores, baby chores and husband chores! I remember staring at myself in shock at the mirror section in Walmart. Why did i stare?

A. I was in my bathroom shoes.
B. The lipstick had run into the cracks and gone outside my lips.
C. messy, curly and frizzy hair
D. Rogue facial hairs
E. All of the above!
The answer was E.

Gone were the days when i did everything possible to achieve that perfect look. I took care of several elements that needed to be just right. Hair, makeup, clothes. It all had to match, and fit my personality.
Again the cycle became wider after i introduced solid food for my son. The number of baths increased, my carpets, my tshirts were ruined. But the mess was worth. The satisfaction a mom gets after confirming baby is full and content.. priceless!

Time take its ride on double fast jets.We had thought about baby after 3 years of marriage. And then that sweet little thing happened without any delay. Pregnancy period for me was smooth as silk. But, I am one of those lucky/unlucky ones who can say 'My baby refused to come out even after the due date!!' He kept us waiting for 3 more days and finally the star arrived. All those baby's first moments are beautiful. Isn't it? I feel there is nothing as beautiful as seeing your baby accomplishing their month to month milestones.

This story began the day i got married to a H1 IT professional. Life just could not get any better. I felt like the princess in wonderland. Being far from home never gave even a sad poke to life. I started my experiments with vegetables and meat, learned to make bed, clean up the house and wait eagerly for darling hubby to get back from work. Was it honey or diamonds rolling over those seconds.. it was magical.
Fashion keeps changing every day.. so does our days.
That H4 life dint seem to go well for long. I remember the times my head was overflowing with jealousy. I hated my friends who dressed up in their professional suits. I hated the guys with Mercedes. There were even times when with an average H1 salary we had to cut down on dining out!! Girls never stop cribbing. would they?
I buried the tasteless H4 memories the day i held H1 in my hands, the happy rain poured down and project Happiness kicked off. Things became very normal. The breath you take after seeing the first dollar paycheck.. aahh awesome.

Today my life just flashed before my eyes and it was beautiful and worth watching. It still is beautiful. To be able to look back upon one’s past life with satisfaction is to live twice. :D

THE BEST MUSIC I EVER HEARD!

IT WAS AROUND 9.00 am ON NOV 10TH ,2008.
I sat on the chair in the waiting room totally confused regarding my pregnancy. My mom, my mother in law and friends kept asking me about my morning sickness.
Fortunately i had nothing of that sort except for brocolli's and cabbage's smell. I was a bit cranky myself worrying abt my baby since i never felt i was  pregnant d and never felt tired as my recent friends turned moms indicated.

With around hundred questions in mind my husband and myself walked inside when the nurse called my name. She took my urine sample and checked my weight.Yipee, i had increased 2 pounds by the third month which she said was perfect!

i was nervous about loosing weight and had dropped out completely on my vegetables and fruits.
I wanted to blame my weighing machine at home as it cheated on me showing 134, which was 2 pounds lesser than what i was. For my satisfaction i double checked my weight removing my shoes!! :D bt yes 138!! i did gain some.

So, without knowing wht the doc was upto today, i walked in.
The nurse put me down when she explained i had to go 2 more days to complete 3 mnths and so
she wouldnt do any scan or test. So, without any hope of scanning, we sat there waiting for my doc.

My doc, Miss Jabusch walked in with a smile saying my blood results were prefectly normal.
She had a small little thing in her hands and asked me to lift my top so that she could get a clear view of my tummy. My heartbeat raised too high when she said "lets listen to the heartbeat".
. i dint know i ws going to listen to my baby.
Doc asked us to concentrate on a 'moving train' like sound.
Within 5 seconds she located my baby and there it was, my babys heartbeat.
The most beautiful and melodious music i ever heard in my life.
Tears rolled into my eyes. Alas, i heard the train. That moving train raised gears and was passing the station of happiness and sentimence. A train filled with joy, love, peace, solace and more as passengers was going smooth on my life track.
My doc creamed my cake saying "its perfect".
I was all set to believe that i was normal and havign a healthy baby inside me.
ohh god! i couldnt belive i ws having a living human inside me... my baby!!
Now i understand a mothers feeling truly.
And i agree - "There is only one pretty child in the world, and every mother has it."
